While it’s still the Year of Mercy, we thought this next novena might be very appropriate: a novena to, “the little saint of great mercy.”
The next novena we will pray is The Novena to St. Maria Goretti!
We will start praying on Monday, June 27th.
This will be a first for us as we’ve never prayed this novena before, but we have received so many requests for it over the years that we felt called to pray it during this Year of Mercy.
St. Maria Goretti is the youngest canonized saint in the Church. When she was canonized in 1950, more people attended her canonization Mass than any other at that point in time.
And when you learn more about her story, it’s not hard to understand why…
Maria died when she was only 11 years old after her neighbor attempted to rape her, and after her refusing, he brutally stabbed her numerous times.
She died the next day, but not before saying these last words:
“I forgive Alessandro Serenelli (her attacker)… and I want him with me in heaven forever.”
St. Maria is known as the Patroness of Purity. She’s also the patron of the youth and rape victims. It’s been said that her greatest virtue was giving forgiveness to her attacker even in the midst of suffering horrible physical pain. Therefore, she’s known for her intercession for mercy, forgiveness and love.
St. Maria Goretti is also known as a miracle & wonder-worker.

Dearest St Maria Goretti, Please intercede for me and put a stop to the torment of memories that flood my mind and undermine my self confidence. I was a very young teen when this attempted rape took place decades ago by an older man in a nightmare scenario. It has been tormenting to have lived, trusting this ugliness was put to a final rest, only to have it’s violence resurface suddenly and unexpectedly. I am thankful for God’s grace of forgiveness for the perpetrator and His mercy and compassion in my life. The trauma has been a difficult life cross to bear and I long for freedom from this pain for myself and all children who have been criminally violated as I was. Thank you, St Maria Goretti for granting this petition and for protecting our daughters from harm.

St. Maria, the saint of love and forgiveness. Please pray for our world. Our world is filled with so much sin, pain, bitterness, war, senseless death, anguish, sadness, please pray that love, happiness and forgiveness returns to our hearts and lives. That we treat people with kindness, love and equality. That this segregation that has so much consumed our world be removed so that we as individuals, parents and grand parents begin to see the usefulness of peace, happiness, laughter, forgiveness for the sake of our children. So that for we can begin creating a better world for our children and their children’s children. A world were their love for one another overtakes the anger and anguish they feel. A world were they are not divided based on color, gender or religion, but were they consider themselves equal before the eyes of God.

Santa Maria please pray for my husband who is in tremendous back pain. He is unable to take pain meds due to other difficulties. Pray that his doctors can determine what is causing this pain and correct it.

I prat this novena for our three year old daughter’s healing from leukemia. Please strengthen her and give her the will to fight and get better!
Through the intercession of Saint Maria Goretti and our Mother Mary, I humbly ask that the custody of my grandson is resolved In a very PEACEFUL manner withoout the need of lawyers, one that is for the highest good of all concerned, one that will enable my daughter to get her life back together again on a path pleasing to our Lord.
Please keep my other daughter safe, happy and healthy as she goes aboard to study this year. Please protect her and keep her safe.
Please open some doors that my husband and I can gain some extra income to assist in the above as well as in other needed areas of our life. We ask this through your intersection and guidance of the Holy Spirit, amen.

Glory and Honour to Saint Maria Goretti. Pray for my children that my daughter will see the truth about her partner and come back home. My son will come back to receive the sacrament of reconciliation and open up the doors in his career. That the Holy Spirit guide them in the direction of their lives. Please pray for good health for my sister and family and open up the doors in our financial and spiritual lives and have mercy on us.

This is a novena that men particularly need in this age of rampant pornography and the prevalent pernicious double standard towards men that allows and permits them to get away with sexuality deviant thinking, desires and actions to their own and others moral and spiritual detriment. Sacred heart of Jesus, make our hearts, desires and thoughts like unto thine. Saint Maria Garetti, blessed Mother Mary and our particular guardian angles, pray for us. Our Father, who is in heaven, holy is Your Name. Give us this day our daily bread and what we each particularly need over and above what we ask for. And, forgive us our trespasses and depts as we forgive others. And, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.
